What is this consultation about?
The risk of wildfire on our moorland areas is ever present. These can be incredibly damaging to wildlife, natural habitats, water and air quality, recreational enjoyment and lead to loss of carbon from our peat moors.
In order to reduce this risk, the Council has had a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in place on our moors since 2019. This has the effect of prohibiting the lighting of fires; barbecues; Chinese lanterns; fireworks or using any article or object which causes a naked flame and which poses a risk of fire. This would apply to areas of moorland within the District which are publicly accessible - both publicly and privately owned.
This PSPO only lasts for 3 years and so we would like to renew it for another 3 years to cover the same areas and activities. Since the PSPO was first brought in, we have had no significant wildfires in the District.
The Wildfire PSPO plan shows these proposed “restricted areas”.
