Consultation

Saltaire Active Travel Neighbourhood

Purpose of the consultation

What is this consultation about?

Bradford Council are bringing forward plans for a trial Active Travel Neighbourhood in the Saltaire area of Bradford.

An Active Travel Neighbourhood (ATN) is an area in which vehicle movements and traffic are reduced to create a better environment for walking and cycling and to make the local neighbourhood a more pleasant area to live, work and visit. Within Active Travel Neighbourhoods, a range of measures are used to reduce through-traffic, including using temporary planters or bollards to prevent cars travelling along the full length of a road, narrowing roads to reduce the volume of vehicles, or introducing measures such as bus gates if appropriate to allow only public transport to pass along the length of a road.

Saltaire is a unique neighbourhood in Bradford District. One of just 28 World Heritage Sites in the UK, its architectural heritage contributes to what is a thriving neighbourhood. Many of the residential streets in the area are narrow and used as cut-throughs by commuters to travel through the area and bypass the A657 (Saltaire Road). The high volume of vehicles driving to and parking in the area degrades the experience and makes cycling and walking around the area challenging.

The Saltaire ATN aims to remove this through traffic to make the World Heritage Site a safer, more pleasant, less congested and less polluted area. This will enable people to travel more locally by walking or cycling and allow people to enjoy the area more safely.

How do I participate in the consultation?

Bradford Council wants to consult the local community, businesses and users of the area to test the level of local support for introducing a trial Active Travel Neighbourhood to reduce through-traffic and make neighbourhood streets safer and more pleasant for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors.

We want to understand how the local community, businesses and users of the area feel about the proposals to trial an Active Travel Neighbourhood in Saltaire and design the Active Travel Neighbourhood proposals with input from local people. In order to do this, we need the help of those who live in, work in and visit the area to understand what measures we could put in place to manage traffic issues in your area.
