DEATH OF FORMER COUNCILLOR MICHAEL WALLS

 

It was the sad duty of the Lord Mayor to report the death, on 24 July, 2019, of former Conservative Councillor, Michael Walls, at the age of 71.

 

Former Councillor Michael Walls served this Council from 2000 to 2016 representing the ward of Queensbury. He was chair of the Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Panel from 2002 to 2010 and also served on numerous other committees during his term as a Councillor.  He was a member of the Bradford City Challenge Foundation from 2000 to 2009.

 

The Lord Mayor had written to Michael’s family to extend condolences.

 

Members and Officers stood for a minute’s silence in his memory.

 

EARTHQUAKE IN PAKISTAN

 

Sympathy and compassion was expressed towards those who had lost their lives, suffered injury or were left homeless as a consequence of the earthquake which occurred close to the City of Mirpur in Kashmir at the end of last month. 

 

HURRICANE DORIAN AND THE DEVASTATION IN THE BAHAMAS

 

Devastation and loss of life had been caused by Hurricane Dorian which hit the Bahamas and neighbouring areas last month. A book of condolence had been opened by The Bahamas Locomotive Society in Ingrow to present to the High Commissioner of the Bahamas in due course and the book was present at this meeting to sign to show solidarity for the people of the islands. The locomotive was built in 1934 as one of the Jubilee Class locos named after Commonwealth countries to celebrate the silver jubilee of HM King George V.

 

BRADFORD 2025 UK CITY OF CULTURE BID

 

The Lord Mayor reported that the bid to be the UK’s City of Culture in 2025 was given a dual launch in Bradford and London at the end of last month. The bid was being led by a team including the University of Bradford, Bradford College and live arts company the Brick Box, as well as other organisations, with the inspiring theme “We Are All Bradford.” To be awarded City of Culture would be an enormous boost to the creative talents in this area and undoubtedly major investment in jobs and regeneration would result.

 

UCI  ROAD WORLD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS YORKSHIRE 2019

 

Saturday 28 September 2019 saw the UCI Road World Cycling championships Women Elite race start from outside City Hall, Bradford.  It was 37 years since the championships were last held in the UK. A large crowd had gathered on the streets decorated with strings of multi-coloured umbrellas to watch the race start.

 

Thanks were given to everyone who worked so hard to ensure the event was such a great success.

 

KEIGHLEY COUGARS NAMED BETFRED LEAGUE ONE CLUB OF THE YEAR

 

Congratulations were given to Keighley Cougars named the Rugby Football League's (RFL) Betfred League One club of the year. The Cougar Park club picked up the prestigious prize at the sport's governing body's awards ceremony held at the Manchester Hilton hotel on 24 September 2019.

STEVE ABBOTT – CHAIR OF BRADFORD UNESCO CITY OF FILM STANDS DOWN

 

Steve Abbott was to stand down as the Chair of Bradford UNESCO City of Film at the end of November 2019 after ten years in the role. Gratitude was shown to Steve for his hard work, originality and inspired vision and to wish him well in his future endeavours.

 

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD – UK UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION 2020

 

The University of Bradford was recently named by the Times and The Sunday Times as the UK University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2020. This prestigious award recognised the University’s outstanding impact on social inclusion ensuring all students, irrespective of their background, were supported to achieve their full potential, maximise their talents and achieve positive academic and graduate employment outcomes.   

 

YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM SUCCESSES

 

Everyone involved was thanked from the organisations, including Council teams, and individuals for their efforts and enthusiasm in creating colourful displays which had led to being given prestigious Yorkshire in Bloom awards.

 

73rd ANNUAL BRADFORD FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE

 

The 73rd annual Bradford Festival of Remembrance would take place at Bradford Cathedral, at 5.00pm on Sunday 3rd November, 2019 featuring the City of Bradford Brass Band, the Cathedral Choir and the Dishforth Military Wives Choir, alongside the traditional Parade of Standards and Acts of Remembrance.

 

REMEMBRANCETIDE

 

A reminder was given of Remembrancetide in November. Remembrance Sunday would be observed on Sunday 10 November, 2019 with a service, an Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony at Bradford Cenotaph at 11.00am.  Other services would take place at various locations throughout the district on this day and a full list will appear on the Council’s website.

 

A short ceremony at the Bradford Cenotaph, led by The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Precentor at Bradford Cathedral, would take place to mark Armistice Day at 11.00am on Monday 11th November, 2019.
