UPDATE BT DIGITAL VOICE PROGRAMME pdf icon PDF 108 KB

Earlier this year, we announced that we would be contacting customers about the switch to our digital home phone service, Digital Voice on a region-by-region basis from the summer. We also expanded our Digital Voice trials with a small group of customers beyond the pilots in Salisbury and Mildenhall, made up of lower usage landline customers, who have a full fibre broadband connection already.

The report of the Bradford West Area Co-ordinator (Document “C”) is an update about the switch to digital home service.

Recommended –

That the update be noted.

Minutes:

Earlier this year, BT announced that we would be contacting customers about the switch to our digital home phone service, Digital Voice on a region-by-region basis from the summer.

A representative of BT was in attendance at the meeting and with the invitation of the Chair, gave a summary of the digital home service. He explained that UK’s landlines were going digital. The Digital Voice was the name of BT’s new home phone service. Digital calls would be made over the company’s broadband network, rather than the old analogue network, which had been around for more than 40 years. The current system was increasingly unreliable, energy hungry and was not able to give UK the world-class service it wished to provide. Switching to Digital Voice would give users clearer call quality, and help prevent the vast majority of scam calls.

For most customers, the upgrade would be as simple as connecting the home
phone handset to a router rather than the phone socket on the wall.

This was a once-in-a generation upgrade. It would connect everyone now and into the future with a more resilient, sustainable and energy-efficient digital phone service.

The Chair welcomed the anticipated installation of the new Digital Voice upgrade.

Resolved –

That the contents in Document “C”, be noted.
